I’ve wondered since childhood why some power lines have red orbs attached to them, and I’ve never gotten a satisfactory answer.  Today I listened to R.E.M. while shoveling snow.  Perhaps it was the honest labor that allowed me to hear, for the first time in nearly thirty years of hearing Driver 8, the lyric ”The power lines have floaters/So the airplanes won’t get snagged.”  Two mysteries solved at once in the quiet cold.
